Does protein give you energy?

Protein is one of the most essential nutrients a human can receive. It is found in every cell of the human body. It can be gained through the consumption of animal products, such as meat and dairy, or plant products, such as nuts, seeds, or tofu. But what is the relationship between protein and energy? Does protein provide your body with a source of energy? Continue reading to learn more about this relationship between protein and energy.

The Relationship Between Protein and Energy

Protein’s main goal is not to provide your body with energy. However, this does not mean it doesn’t. Protein’s primary function within your body is to build and maintain muscle cell tissue so that your muscles can properly function and grow. So if you were to look at protein as an energy source for building and maintaining muscle function and growth, one can say it does provide your body with this certain source of energy.

If you consider protein and its relationship to your body’s overall source of energy, you should realize that protein is in it for the long haul, not the quick fix. Due to its complex structure your body does not easily break protein down like it will carbohydrates. Protein will not provide you with that immediate surge of energy your body may be looking for. If, however, your body is not receiving enough calories from the foods you are eating or the fat you have stored, it may turn to protein for this energy source. Your body will compensate when it is in dire need of fuel, by breaking protein down into ketone bodies in order to use this protein for energy.

It is important to make sure you are fueling your body with the proper nutrients it needs to receive this healthy source of energy so that you do not force your body to work harder and break down its supply of protein. At Innovative Sports Nutrition, we believe in fueling your body with a healthy amount of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in order to perform as the best version of yourself.
